Postdoctoral position in flow characterization and heat flux

Publicerades: 25:e September 2018 Sista ansökningsdagen: 20:e December 2018

Information about the project
The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position starting January 1st, 2019, or as agreed. The successful candidate will be offered a two-year employment at Chalmers in the Division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems.

The aim of the project is to develop new diagnostic tools for understanding fluid flow and heat transfer in specialized geometries relevant for both light and heavy-duty powertrains, with a focus on the demands of hybrid vehicle designs. This involves work with two- and three-dimensional imaging and velocimetry to capture air flow dynamics and temperature information which will be used to validate and drive development of advanced heat transfer models. The project constitutes part of a collaboration between Volvo Trucks, Volvo Car Group, Chalmers University of Technology, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

The aim is to
(1) Develop a flexible experimental test-bed with integrated optical diagnostics for correlated flow and temperature measurements.
(2) Develop advanced diagnostics for measurement and analysis of transient run conditions including start/stop scenarios, soak, and various cooling configurations.
(3) Create a well-documented database of run conditions and experimental data for validation of CFD models.

The goal is to contribute quantitative temperature and flow data for understanding of heat-transfer that will benefit both further research and current applications in internal combustion and hybrid vehicle powertrains.
At the Division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems we conduct advanced research in experimental fluid physics, combustion, spray and heat-transfer modeling, and development of non-intrusive diagnostics for reacting and non-reacting flows. More information about our research groups is available on the website http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/m2/research/combustion/

Major responsibilities
Your primary responsibility will be to pursue research and development related to flow and heat transfer measurements within the project. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by senior researchers at the involved departments and companies. The position also includes opportunities for teaching as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

The position is a full-time temporary employment with a competitive salary and with social benefits. This position is limited to two years with current funding.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
You should have a Ph.D. in Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, completed before the starting date of employment. Fluency in English is expected. Experience using PIV is also important to qualify for this position. Experience in optics, laser-based diagnostics, image analysis, and good programming skills are considered especially meriting.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English, as well as an ability to plan and organize the work involved.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure
